"Miniature Chest of Drawers and Kitchen Table and Cabinet

December 12, 2018 0 Comments
Kitchen Cabinet Plans, Instructions included by Klenke.
A kitchen is a room or part of a room used for cooking and food preparation in a dwelling or in a commercial establishment. A modern middle-class residential kitchen is typically equipped with a stove, a sink with hot and cold running water, a refrigerator, and worktops and kitchen cabinets arranged according to a modular design. Many households have a microwave oven, a dishwasher, and other electric appliances. The main functions of a kitchen are to store, prepare and cook food (and to complete related tasks such as dishwashing). The room or area may also be used for dining (or small meals such as breakfast), entertaining and laundry. The design and construction of kitchens is a huge market all over the world. The United States are expected to generate $47,730m in the kitchen furniture industry for 2018 alone. Read more...

November 28, 2018 0 Comments
Davenport was the name of a series of sofas made by the Massachusetts furniture manufacturer A. H. Davenport and Company, now defunct. Due to the popularity of the furniture at the time, the name davenport became a genericized trademark. Read more...

Craft a Miniature Cradle, Sewing Cabinet and Piano Bench

November 28, 2018 0 Comments
A bassinet, bassinette, or cradle is a bed specifically for babies from birth to about four months. Bassinets are generally designed to work with fixed legs or casters, while cradles are generally designed to provide a rocking or gliding motion. Bassinets and cradles are distinguished from Moses baskets and carry cots, which are designed to be carried and sit directly on the floor or furniture. After four months, babies are often transferred to a crib (North American usage) or cot (UK usage). In the United States, however, the bedside sleeper is the prevalent option, since they are generally bigger, recommended up to 6 months, and often used up to a year. Read more...

Miniature Governor Winthrop Secretary Plans and Instructions

November 28, 2018 0 Comments
In some places the slant top desk is known as a "bureau" desk, and in others it goes under the name of slope-front desk. In the United States, the slant top desk is sometimes called a Governor Winthrop desk, in memory of John Winthrop, the 17th century governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. As Winthrop died in 1647, he had no actual connection to this style of desk, which originated in the 18th century and is especially associated with Chippendale. The name "Winthrop" was attached to this kind of desk by the Winthrop Furniture Co. of Boston, Massachusetts, who offered their "Gov. Winthrop" desk in 1924, during the colonial revival period. Craft a Grandfather Clock, Standing Book Shelves and a Chippendale Mirror

November 27, 2018 0 Comments
Thomas Chippendale was the first designer to so impress his personality on his work that the particular style that he helped develop has borne his name ever since. He was a carver by trade, but later started in business in St. Martins Lane, London. His book, the "Gentleman's and Cabinetmakers' Directory," was published in 1754 and a later edition in 1762. Miniature Baby Grand Piano Plans and Instructions

November 26, 2018 0 Comments
The piano is an acoustic, stringed musical instrument invented in Italy by Bartolomeo Cristofori around the year 1700 (the exact year is uncertain), in which the strings are struck by hammers. It is played using a keyboard, which is a row of keys (small levers) that the performer presses down or strikes with the fingers and thumbs of both hands to cause the hammers to strike the strings. The word piano is a shortened form of pianoforte, the Italian term for the early 1700s versions of the instrument, which in turn derives from gravicembalo col piano e forte and fortepiano. The Italian musical terms piano and forte indicate "soft" and "loud" respectively, in this context referring to the variations in volume (i.e., loudness) produced in response to a pianist's touch or pressure on the keys: the greater the velocity of a key press, the greater the force of the hammer hitting the strings, and the louder the sound of the note produced and the stronger the attack. The name was created as a contrast to harpsichord, a musical instrument that doesn't allow variation in volume. The first forte pianos in the 1700s had a quieter sound and smaller dynamic range. Simple Chenille Stem Christmas Wreaths

November 09, 2018 0 Comments
Nothing says welcome to our home like a cheerful, festive wreath wired to the front door of your dollhouse! Wreaths are so simple to make, you'll want to make more than one.
Take time and care to attach a tiny hook permanently to your dollhouse door so that you can change out the decorations according to the season or holiday.

Supply List:
  • furry chenille stems in green or red
  • Mardi-Gras beads or any beads
  • ribbon
  • wire for a hook attachment
  • hot glue gun and hot glue
Step-by-Step Directions:
  1. Twist the chenille stem into a wreath shape. Hold the initial shape up to the door or wall that you would like to decorate it with. Then you can reshape the wreath larger or smaller if need be.
  2. Twist the Mardi-Gras beads around the wreaths and hot glue these to the chenille stems as needed.
  3. Shape the ribbons into bows and hot glue these onto the top of each wreath.
  4. Shape and hook a small wire to the back of the ribbon for hanging.

DIY Clamshell Laptop for Your Favorite Doll

October 09, 2018 0 Comments
Left, Cut and trim the pattern for a doll laptop below. Draw around it on top of scrap pieces of cardboard
or cardstock. (laptop is 2 1/2" x 1 3/4") Center, the laptops shut. Right, the laptops open with monitors on display.
The "clamshell" shape of this pretend, laptop computer is made by layering and pressing corrugated cardboard pieces together. Don't let the finished product intimidate you! The process is a simple one and a child as young as 10 can do it.
It is also important to use wood putty and a light weight sandpaper for the process, so make sure that you have all of the supplies on hand before beginning. I have linked to similar crafts below for those of you who are looking to craft something a bit simpler; all of these options are very good as well.

Supply List:
  • scrap corrugated cardboard
  • masking tape
  • scissors
  • wood putty
  • sandpaper
  • Mod Podge (optional)
  • white school glue
  • spray paint or acrylic liquid paint or nail polish
  • metallic adhesive tape (alternative)
  • tiny stickers for your laptop logo icon and the monitor screen
  • free printable keyboards at printable360
  • picture for monitor (screen saver)
  • black tape or paper for touchpad
Step-by-Step Instructions:
  1. Cut and trim the pattern for a doll laptop below. Draw around it on top of scrap pieces of cardboard or cardstock. (laptop is 2 1/2" x 1 3/4")
  2. Glue together two pieces of cardboard for both the top and bottom of the laptop, so that you will have four cardboard cutouts in total to make the computer.
  3. Use masking tape then to cover all of the surfaces neatly. Trimming excess tape around the corners as you go.
  4. Apply a very thin layer of wood putty to the outside surfaces of both the top and bottom of the laptop. This application will fill the cracks and help to create a subtle dome-like surface (clamshell) for both the top and bottom pieces of your play laptop computer.
  5. After the laptop pieces have dried overnight, lightly sand the top, bottom and edges of the surfaces where you have applied the wood putty.
  6. You may wish to repeat step 4 and 5 in order to achieve a perfected looking surface. Remember, this is a learning process. Do not become overly anxious about your first efforts. It takes perseverance and practice to achieve the best results.
  7. With the metallic adhesive tape, hinge the top and bottom laptop pieces together from the inside of the laptop only. If you tape this hinge from both sides the laptop may not close properly. If you haven't any metallic adhesive tape you can use the masking tape. I suggest the metallic adhesive because it can take more wear, tear and play.
  8. Open the laptop and lay it face down to either spray paint it or to apply any liquid acrylic paint of your own choosing.
  9. Paint these surfaces with several even coats and let them dry.
  10. Print and cut keyboard clipart (above link). Apply these with Mod Podge or white glue if that is all you have on hand.
  11. Cut and stick a smaller square from the black tape and apply this for the touchpad.
  12. Cut a screen saver from a picture you like in a magazine and apply this with glue to the inside of your tiny laptop.
  13. Don't forget to glue a tiny sticker for your laptop's logo icon on the topside of your doll's computer.
  14. Let the glue and paint cure for a day before handling the tiny laptop.

Sew Groovy Textile Art for A Doll House

September 06, 2018 0 Comments
I chose to layer square patterns on top of the circles
in this modern version of a doll tapestry.
Anyone can use a doll house craft like this one to show off a few of their own needlework skills.
The fancy trim work on this miniature tapestry is much easier to make than it looks. All you need are some unusual yarns to tack around the shapes, to give it texture and pizzazz!
Parents could supply their young ones with fabric glue and make this project a no-sew application if they need to.
I made this modern tapestry for our doll house using the following supplies:

Supply List:
  • three or four interesting, fuzzy yarn scraps
  • a fabric scrap, modern dot pattern
  • embroidery floss
  • beads for the hanger
  • a long wooden skewer or dowel
  • hot glue
  • fabric glue (optional)
Step-by-Step Directions:
  1. Cut and layer shapes with yarn trims onto one piece of select fabric for this tapestry.
  2. Use either threads and a needle for the craft or fabric glue if you do not know how to sew yet.
  3. You can choose to use any sewing stitch or color combinations to make an abstract version of this craft similar to my own example.
  4. After you have finished your design, fold over a piece of fabric measuring approximately 1/2 inch at the top of your tapestry and sew it to the backside with a whip stitch or glue it in place if you prefer. This will create a long, narrow pocket for you to insert the dowel rod or wooden skewer.
  5. Hot glue beads at either end to hold the wooden dowel in place. Now you can tie a yarn at either end to hang the doll sized tapestry on any wall in your own doll house.
Left, Hot glue beads at either end to hold the wooden dowel in place. Center, Cut and layer shapes with yarn
trims onto one piece of select fabric for this tapestry. Right, Use either threads and a needle for the
craft or fabric glue if you do not know how to sew yet.

Assembling A Plant Stand

September 06, 2018 0 Comments
Three different views of the same tiny plant stand.
Our doll house needs some faux plants to brighten up the corners! I will show you how to cut your own plants from paper in the future, but for now, you can make a few select things with artificial plant picks. Plant picks are sold in hobby stores, flower shops and craft outlets in the United States. You can also find them at dollar stores. Try to select the smallest plants so that the arrangements you craft are to scale.

Supply List:
  • fern pick
  • votive candle holder
  • small decorative rocks
  • white school glue
  • paper mache pulp
  • brown acrylic paint
Step-by-Step Instructions:
  1. Clean the votive candle holder with warm water and soap. Be sure to remove all wax residue before continuing.
  2. Fill the bottom of the glass votive holder with small decorative rocks and then pour a layer of white school glue on top of these. Let this layer dry for several days.
  3. Mix a small amount of paper mache pulp according to the directions on the label of the package. Add a bit of brown acrylic paint to the pulp to color it to look like dirt.
  4. Layer this brown pulp on top of the decorative rocks.
  5. Take the fern pick and separate the leaves so that you have multiple fronds, each with their own wire, to stick into this sticky pulp "dirt."
  6. Arrange the wired fronds into a pleasing plant formation inside the votive candle holder.
  7. This plant arrangement will take about a week to dry. Put it in the sunshine if possible.
Left, votive candle holder and glass insert. Center, the artificial fern fronds separated from the pick.
Right, the decorative rock bits help to hold the wire fronds in place and also look attractive.

DIY Feather Dusters for Your Doll's House

August 18, 2018 0 Comments
Above are the doll's yellow and lavender feather dusters. These are stored
in the utility cabinet when they are not being used. See them hanging on
the cabinet's hooks here.
These feather dusters sure come in handy after the dust settles in our doll's house! So much construction going on this month.
Why not make a few for your collection today? They are easy to make and cost less than a penny to manufacture.
Feather dusters can be made any size, miniature or playscale. It all depends on the length you make the toothpick.

Supply List:
  • craft feathers
  • toothpicks
  • Sculpey, oven bake clay
  • white school glue
  • white twine
Step-by-Step Directions:
  1. Shape a simple little handle onto the end of a toothpick. Make sure that it encompasses at least 1/2 inch of the toothpick. This will make your feather duster durable.
  2. Use the tip of a toothpick to poke a tiny hole into the end of the handle so that you can tie a small bit of twine on the end for hanging.
  3. Bake these tiny handles in the oven at 270 degrees for 10 minutes. You do not need to remove the toothpicks from the sculpted handles. If these come out with ease, glue them back into the handles after the baking using school glue.
  4. After the handles have cooled, attach feathers to the opposite end of the toothpicks with a little glue and twine.
  5. Using white school glue and twine, cover the remaining parts of the exposed wooden toothpicks. (see photo above)

Collecting Rugs for Your Doll's House

    August 04, 2018 0 Comments

Covering the floors of your doll house may seem a tedious prospect if you believe that these must always be handcrafted by yourself.
In truth, the successful decorating of a doll's house may have more to do with your ability to reinterpret the use of items that are already in your actual home, objects such as placemats for example. Placemats come in all kinds of textured surfaces and are produced in a wide range of color combinations. Some of them are woven from grass, others are printed on cotton. If purchased from a department store, placemats come with finished edges too. Find the perfect placemat and you've found a Barbie sized rug that you need not alter in the least, unless you want to.
I have even found smaller bath mats in dollar stores that look exactly like sophisticated area rugs when displayed inside a doll's house.
Often I use one item in a doll's room to imagine additional furnishings that would normally accompany it, if it were included in an actual adult sized space. If I had this rug on the floor, which couch or bed would go best with it and so on...
Placemats are best purchased for a doll's house when they are most affordable. These are frequently tossed on clearance tables in stores and sold for pennies on the dollar at the end of a season. You can pick them up at a thrift stores and garage sales as well.
An unfashionable placemat may make a far more attractive rug for your doll. I have frequently discovered that things considered ugly when designed for one use, become marvelously unique when repurposed for another.
So take your little ones shopping for these affordable area rugs this weekend. They'll enjoy the novelty of the hunt and you will enjoy less money spent!

Make a pom-pom doll house rug

    June 26, 2018 0 Comments
A finished pom pom rug for a doll's house.
What doll wouldn't enjoy such a fun, bumpy rug to decorate her home with?
This little miniature doll house rug is a simple and entertaining first sewing project for a nine to ten year old student.
He or she will need to learn how to thread a needle and control it while stringing together a whole fist full of colorful pom-poms.

    Supply List:
    • multiple colored, small pom-poms
    • needle and thread
    Step-by-Step Directions:
    1. First you will need to select a colorful thread and needle to work with.
    2. Thread the needle and knot the end of your thread so that thread will get caught up inside your first pom-pom. This requires a bit of trail and error. Sometimes the threads will not catch properly as you string the pom-poms and you will need to repeat the process.
    3. Soon you will have a long string of pom-poms to wind up together.
    4. Work your threaded needle between the chain of pom-poms, from side to side so that these butt up next to each other to form a soft round rug.
    5. As you work, you may need to sew in a loose pom-pom here and there to make the rug stiffer.
    6. The more pom-poms you add, the bigger the miniature rug becomes! Measure it against a doll's chair, sofa, or even a bed in order to determine just how large you would like the rug to be.
    7. Work the threaded needle back and forth into the last pom-pom on the chain before trimming the needle off the thread.
These are miniature pom-poms that you can purchase from most any dollar store or hobby shop.

Older kids may like to try making a life-sized pom-pom
rug for their room after successfully finishing the
    miniature project above.
